Featured Speakers

Thursday, August 14 - Plenary Lunch, 12:00 PM in Salon A

"The Challenges Facing US Higher Education and the Need for New Policy Leadership" by King Alexander, President, California State University, Long Beach.

Friday, August 15 - Ethics Section Breakfast at 8:00 AM in the Ocean Ballroom

Patrick Kuhse, a nationally-recognized speaker on Business Ethics, will be the featured speaker at the Ethics Section breakfast on Friday, August 15, in Long Beach, and he will also be a featured speaker during an academic session at the conference. Patrick will talk about his personal journey from a successful stockbroker with a loving family and home in the suburbs of San Diego, to the jungles of Costa Rica as an international fugitive, incarceration in two countries, and back again. While serving four years in prison for money laundering, bribing a public official, and conspiracy, Patrick looked deep into his soul and asked himself, "How do smart, educated, successful people get themselves into so much trouble?"

Raised in what he describes as a Mayberry-like childhood in a small Iowa town, Patrick searched to understand his descent and identified eight critical thinking errors common in all unethical behavior, of which he and executives at Enron, Tyco, and WorldCom were guilty. Patrick has made it his life's work to teach others the warning signs of unethical behavior, the series of small compromises that just get bigger and bigger, like a crack in the windshield. He has given hundreds of presentations to businesses, professional organizations and major universities, including Harvard and Stanford. He is the Ethics Fellow in the Poe Center for Business Ethics at the University of Florida, Warrington College of Business Administration and at the Sawyer Business School at Suffolk University in Boston. An engaging and dynamic speaker with an important message, Patrick will share his personal story and explore the critical thinking errors of recent newsmakers, Elliot Spitzer, Barry Bonds, and Roger Clemens.

Friday, August 15 - Ethics Session F3 at 10:30 AM in the Melbourne Room

"How to Develop an Effective Ethics Education Environment: Proven Techniques from the Award Winning University of Arizona Ethics Initiative" by Patrick Kuhse, Ethics Fellow, University of Florida and Suffolk University and Paul Melendez, University of Arizona.
